National Supermarket Week of Action

Nov. 18 to Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 2009

This Thanksgiving, when you shop for your turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing, drop a Campaign for Fair Food letter off to the store manager!

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year for this country's supermarkets. But this Thanksgiving, give your supermarket more than your money, give them the message that you support fair wages and working conditions for farmworkers.

Simply check the list below, download the manager letter here, and deliver the letter and ask the supermarket manager to share your concerns with the company’s corporate headquarters. When you're done, contact us to let us know what supermarket you visited to and how it went.

And if you're interested in joining a picket outside of a supermarket that is already being planned, or organizing one on your own, please contact us for more info.

Background: The day after Thanksgiving, 1960, the documentary "Harvest of Shame," narrated by famed journalist Edward R. Murrow, shocked millions of Americans with its depiction of the daily degradation faced by the nations' migrant farmworkers.

Today, nearly 50 years later, a movement for Fair Food is finally bringing fairer wages and more humane working conditions to Florida's fields thanks to a historic alliance of farmworkers, consumers, growers, and seven retail food industry leaders such as Yum Brands, McDonald's, Burger King, Whole Foods, and Compass Group. While the transition to a more just Florida tomato industry is well underway, much remains to be done to ensure this future.

This Thanksgiving season, remember farmworkers and honor the dignity of their labor by urging Stop & Shop, Giant, Publix, Ralph’s, Kroger and other Kroger-owned grocery chains to address the sub-poverty wages and human rights abuses faced by farmworkers who harvest their tomatoes.
